Mechanical engineering degrees are a popular field of study for young Australians.
But a report by the Australian Bureau of Statistics suggests there’s more to it than meets the eye.
In its latest annual report, the ABS found that the number of engineering degrees in the country has been growing steadily for the past five years, while the number with the highest concentration of engineering graduates has been increasing.
The number of mechanical engineering and computer science degrees, or M.
Eng, in the world grew by 1.2 per cent to 1.26 million in the year to March 2019, the report said.
“In other words, the number is increasing rapidly,” said Mark O’Sullivan, senior lecturer in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at RMIT University.
Engineering graduates are a key part of the Australian economy, with the number growing by an average of 3 per cent a year, with more than 3,000 engineering degrees awarded in the first three months of this financial year alone.
O’Sullivan said the increase in engineering degrees is a big change from the early years of the century, when the numbers of engineering and related degrees were at their lowest level in decades.
There was a lot of emphasis on computer science, but now engineering is a more significant part of what we do, he said.
“It’s an area where we’re seeing some of the biggest opportunities.”

“Engineering students in Australia, which is growing in the same way as other fields, are also more likely to take on positions in industry.
According to the Bureau of Industry and Energy, engineering graduates were also more involved in higher education in the third quarter of 2019, with nearly half of engineering students completing their degree in a career or postgraduate program.
At RMIT, the M. Eng programme is a popular choice among students.
Students can apply for the M-Eng, which costs $18,000 and covers the cost of attending a 12-month training course, plus fees and other costs, plus up to six years of unpaid internships.
It is available to students who are not Australian citizens or permanent residents and to those who have completed their degree from overseas.
However, the program is not the only one available in the University of Technology Sydney, with engineering students taking up a number of other engineering degrees including B.
Eng and B.
Students from the Australian Research Council’s Graduate Engineering Program and the University’s Engineering and Technology Centre can also get a master’s degree in engineering.
This is not to say that students are not interested in engineering at RMET, as they are.
More than half of RMIT’s engineering students are actively pursuing their engineering degrees, and more than one in four have completed at least one engineering degree.
The average engineering student earns $65,000 in full-time employment, and the median income is $72,000.

[But] it’s important to remember that it’s still only a small part of our economy, so we need to continue to develop this industry,” he said, pointing out that RMET’s engineering programs were well-funded.
