A new breed of electric car has hit the Australian market with a big, turbocharged engine and an impressive price tag of $200,000.
The new Nissan Leaf is a huge step forward for electric vehicles, and it’s a great example of what electric vehicles can do for our country’s economy.
But for the first time in history, electric cars are going to have to compete against more traditional cars on the road.
And Nissan has been on a roll.
The Leaf is the world’s most popular car in the US, selling around 13,000 cars per day.
Its popularity is a sign of the success of electric vehicles in the UK, and the UK’s government is committed to encouraging the adoption of EVs and making them available to every home.
Nissan has set itself a goal of reducing emissions by 50 per cent by 2025, and its CEO, Carlos Ghosn, says that the company is building a battery to replace the engine of every Nissan Leaf sold in the next decade.
But it may not be enough to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
We know that the batteries that we build today are about 10 to 20 per cent more efficient than the batteries we were building in the 1980s,” he told the ABC’s Catalyst programme.”
We’re not going to be able to get rid of the emissions that we’re currently emitting.
“How much of a problem is it?
The biggest issue with EVs is the fact they are expensive to run, with their battery packs costing up to $150,000 each.
And they have a range of only 40km, so there’s a huge distance between them and any road user.”
It’s quite hard to be environmentally conscious when you’re charging the car,” Professor Gillian Turetsky, a climate scientist at the University of Melbourne, told the Catalyst programme.”
The biggest challenge is that electric cars have a very small range.
The range of a standard petrol car is about 10 kilometres, whereas a Nissan Leaf will travel for about 40 kilometres.
“If the Leaf is fully charged it will last about 10 days on a single charge.
But Professor Turets says that battery packs need to be replaced every three to five years.
So what’s the solution?
The Nissan Leaf has a number of features that make it easy to charge and the range is good, but they’re not always the best.
The biggest problem with EVs isn’t their range, but the cost.
Professor Turetz says the battery is actually a much better investment for a country’s electric grid than a car.”
You could charge the battery of an electric car for a few hundred dollars and save that much energy per year, which is probably not going too far,” she said.”
But the battery can’t store that much electricity.
“Professor Turerts believes that there’s an urgent need to reduce the cost of batteries.”
What we need to do is get into the technology of storing energy, and making batteries much more efficient,” she says.”
There’s lots of people out there who are working on batteries that are very promising, but for the foreseeable future we need a new battery technology that has more energy storage.
